Read Genesis 1:1-2:6
Genesis 1:1-2:6 Describes God creating all things for His glorious purpose.
God wants us to know that Jesus moves His World from dark chaos to purposeful Light. Notice the movement.
I. God shaped nothing.
- In the nothing there was chaos. (No form and void, a picture of no stability and pure confusion.)
- In the nothing there was darkness. Figuratively, misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, wickedness: dark, night, & obscurity.
II. God made everything this world has and needs for His glorious purpose—notice His Working Schedule.
- First day: creation of light 1:3-5: “Then God said, “let there be light.” He then divides the light from the darkness.
- The first step for moving out of the chaos, the misery, ignorance, sorrow, and wickedness.
- Jesus named light day, and darkness night so that we could know the difference from good and bad.
- The Second Day: Creation of space and water 1:6-8: He separates the atmospheric, upper water (clouds) from the lower waters-seas.
- The Third Day: Creation of plant life. 1:9-13.
- First, He separates the water from the land for plant life.
- Then God causes the earth to bring forth green grass, plants, trees, and vegetation of every kind.
- The Fourth Day:
- Creation of sun, moon, and stars. 1:14-19.
- This creates the order of time, and seasons.
- The Fifth day:
- Creation of fish for sea life.
- Fowls for flying life. 1:20-23.
- The Sixth Day: creation of land animals and people. 1:24-31.
- The brute creatures: livestock and all wild beasts. 1:24-25.
- The blessed creature who was given two things.
- The image of God. 26-27. For good and glory.
- The instructions from God. 26-31
- People are to rule over all nature. 26-28
- People are to fill the earth with their own kind. 28
- People are to eat plant life. 29
- The animals are to eat plant life. 30
- The pronouncement of God “Everything was very good”. 31
- The Seventh Day: God rests. 2:1-6.
- His creative work was completed and pronounced very good.
- God blesses and sets apart the seventh day for rest because the work was finished. Jesus said that same thing before He rested from His work on this side of eternity.
III. Why?
Isaiah 46:9-10. “Remember the former things long past. I am God, there is no other. I am God, there’s no one like Me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things which have not been done saying, ‘My purpose will be established. I will accomplish all My good pleasure.’”
- God’s glory was to create a world where His light could shine with goodness and for the purpose of having a Creature that was able to share His love and bring glory to His world.
- The answer is redemption of a people for His eternal glory and worshiping Him forever and ever. See Ephesians 2:7.
- The work of redemption is not incidental; it is the reason why the universe exists. It is the reason why there is an earth. It is the reason why there is a supporting life system for man.
Applications:
God made everything for so humans can share His common grace. His goodness and His glory.
God gave humans freedom to trust in Him, obey Him, surrender to Him and rest with Him.
Second Corinthians chapter 4:6, “For God who said, ‘Light shall shine out of darkness’”
The creation of light is a picture of salvation. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,” 2 “And the earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep.” God said, “Let there be light.” God who spoke light into darkness “is the One who has shines into our hearts to give us the life of Christ.”
God creating light in the midst of the darkness, by His sovereign instantaneous power, is a picture of what He does in the darkness of the sinner’s heart.
Jonathan Edwards “What a magnificent picture of the life of a believer. In the darkness and in a split second the light shines in his heart and he lives in the light, but the process of sanctification just begins, and he flourishes and he becomes richer and fuller until one day he enters into everlasting rest. This is the picture. This is the glory of redemption tucked into the testimony of creation.
So, What Now? Think about this song as a prayer. “Shine Your Light on Me” Ray Charles style.
Lord, I’ve been wandering—down this weary road.
Caring my burden, —feeling so alone.
But when I hear your voice, —oh, it lifts my soul.
You bring me home, –Lord, make my spirit whole.
Shine Your Light on me—Oh shine it bright!
Guide my heart, Lord—through the darkest night!
I need Your love. –I need Your grace.
Shine Your Light on me—show me Your face.
I’ve seen the storm—felt the pouring rain.
Walked through the valley –carried so much pain.
But you LORD are- you are my sweet refrain- lifting me up. Breaking every chain.
Shine Your Light on me—oh shine it bright.
Guide my heart, Lord—through the darkest night!
I need Your love. –I need Your grace.
Shine Your Light on me—show me Your face.
